What is this Fluffy Fat?
Does it seem like your body hit that magical age when you started slowing down and blowing up?
You have less energy, digestion is acting up with gas, bloating, acid reflux?. Bowel movements are a bit odd...constipation, loose or back and forth? Brain isn't as sharp as it used to be etc?
Gosh! What is happening? Where did all this dimply fluffy fat come from?
There are 2 types of fat categories in my view: Functional and dysfunctional fat. Red Fat which is full of blood is functional fat. It is firmer and full of nutrients that a body can use to survive a long winter like the Eskomos. But White Fat does not really have a positive function that we know of. Also the more fluffy fat you have, the more likely you are to have increased levels of estrogen (linked to PCOS and infertility) which make you want to hold on to more fluffy fat so a bit of a loop of dysfunction. From my experience, this fat is from poor enzymes leading to poor digestion, emulsification and poor intestinal flora or environment. Couple that with mineral deficiency caused by poor digestion seems to make people hold onto more fluffy fat.
So how does that work?
Foods fall into 3 main categories: Proteins like meat, beans etc. Carbohydrates: beneficial: like vegetables and non-beneficial: simple carbs like the "white" things like bread, rice, potatoes, etc. Fats: beneficial and non-beneficial as well.
Basically, proteins breakdown starts in the stomach and assisted by pancreas and takes on average 12 hours. Carb digestion starts in the mouth and breakdown quickly. Fat is digested by the stomach pancreas and then emulsified by the bile from the liver.
Gold-medal sources of dietary minerals
- Calcium: Yogurt, cheese, milk, tofu, sardines, salmon, fortified juices, and leafy green vegetables such as broccoli and kale (but not spinach or Swiss chard, which contain binders that lessen absorption).
- Iron: Red meat, cooked soybeans, pumpkin seeds, cooked lentils, ground turkey, and fortified bread and breakfast cereals.
- Magnesium: Almonds, green vegetables such as spinach and broccoli, soybeans, peanut butter, sunflower and other seeds, halibut, whole-wheat bread, and milk.
- Potassium: Raisins, baked potatoes (with the skin), tomatoes, cooked black beans, plain low-fat yogurt, bananas, and spinach.1.This list is a good general guide but most people I run across interpret each section down to one or 2 items like cheese, meat, almonds, bananas. Unfortunately cheese can cause a number of issues for people that don't have good digestion, tofu and unfermented soy beans can spike estrogen levels, fish and seafood can have high mercury and radiation levels, cruciferous veggies like broccoli, cauliflower and kale should be par-cooked and served with oil to digest. Most people with thyroid disorders don't react well with fresh cruciferous veggies. Many people have issues with almonds and since they are the nut of the century, I believe there will be allergic reactions in the future. Everything in moderations is the best strategy.I am finding most of my patients are allergic to night shades like potatoes, peppers and tomatoes resulting in gas, bloating etc. Bananas are loaded with sugar (along with most fruits making a poor choice if you are in poor health or healing from a surgery) Sugar triggers inflammation and inflammation causes pain. Best to cut out as much sugar from every source you can until you are in tip top shape and your body can handle. (but keep in small amounts and nutrient rich or you will be right back where you started)As you look around, it seems it happens to everyone, except maybe a small percentage of people.Between Keto, Intermittent Fasting and Fat for Fuel-type diets, some people are finding relief but the majority are just plugging away, too busy with life to focus on major diet changes.
